To honour the memory of its namesake, Paul ‘Wally’ Popham, Popham Kidney Support, a charity rooted in Swansea, has announced “Wally’s Way,” a meaningful fundraising event that coincides with the ten-year remembrance of his passing.

This one-off event is taking place on October 20 at Morgan’s Hotel, Swansea, also marks the charity’s tenth anniversary providing an array of support services including financial, informational and emotional support to kidney patients and their families throughout Wales.

In honour of Wally, the evening will be hosted by the renowned Swansea figure, Kev Johns. The event features a drink upon arrival, a 3-course meal, and guest speakers including Swansea football legends, Alan Curtis and Vic Gomersall, among others. In addition to the guest speakers, live music will be provided by Swansea-based band, The Soulskunks.

Guests are encouraged to adhere to a dress code of lounge suits and cocktail dresses, with a special request to incorporate the colours green and/or red, symbolising the charity and Wales respectively.

Popham Kidney Support was originally founded as The Paul Popham Fund, Renal Support Wales in March 2013, five months after the passing of Paul Popham – father of CEO, Joanne Popham – following a courageous battle with kidney cancer. Ten years on, and the charity has grown exponentially, supporting over 3,000 people during 2022 alone.

Joanne Popham, CEO, Popham Kidney Support, said:

“We warmly invite all supporters to join us at this special event “Wally’s Way”, a heartfelt tribute to my late father, Paul Wally Popham. The charity was set up ten years ago in his memory and he would be so proud of how the charity supports all affected by kidney disease. What he would not like is his name being associated with it, but that is our family’s honour to keep his legacy alive.

“This event is to ensure that his legacy remains firmly at the heart of the charity and in all that it does. By purchasing tickets and participating in this special occasion, you not only honour his memory but also contribute to the continued support of kidney patients and their families across Wales. A one-off event lest we never forget. Your presence would mean the world to us as we come together to celebrate a remarkable man and make a difference in the lives of kidney patients.

“And don’t worry, if the Welsh rugby team get through to the semi-finals of the Rugby World Cup, the game will be shown during dinner, as Wally would have wanted.”
