In honour of its 50th anniversary The Golden Hinde museum ship moored in central London is running a fun, creative competition for schools.

This unique opportunity allows participating schools to win an educational tour of the ship for their class.

The original was renowned for its historic privateering circumnavigation of the globe from 1577 to 1580, The Golden Hinde replica has etched its own remarkable journey, successfully completing its own circumnavigation, numerous Atlantic crossings, and an impressive distance of over 100,000 nautical miles.

Now, the ship warmly invites primary school pupils to partake in an endeavour by designing a special 50th birthday card for The Golden Hinde. A selection of submissions will be exhibited on board the ship for visitors to see. See the entry pack for Primary schools  here

Additionally, secondary schools are encouraged to use their poetic prowess to write captivating poems around the theme of sailing or the sea. See the entry pack for Secondary schools here

The entries will be evaluated by former crewmate and one-time resident artist, Zillah Richards, alongside ship navigator, Jilly Francis. The judges will be looking for entries that show creativity, originality, and showcase The Golden Hinde’s history.

Participating schools need to submit their entries no later than May 22, 2023. The winners of this competition will be publicly announced on May 31, adding to the excitement surrounding The Golden Hinde’s anniversary celebrations. The Golden Hinde is also running a special ‘Circumnavigation challenge’ as part of its 50th celebrations to raise key funds to maintain the ship. The ship has completed one circumnavigation, as well as several Atlantic crossings and over 100,00 miles of sailing and is calling on schools and families to undertake their own Circumnavigation Challenge of the world, in their city or town, the local park, or school to raise funds to enable the ship to remain open for future generations of students.
